Crockpot Pizza Lasagna

I love blogging about food.  Desserts are my favorite things to make and to eat.  Turns out desserts are also so much easier to photograph!  I rarely see a picture of a cupcake that doesn’t instantly make me crave that cupcake.  But I am not strictly a dessert blogger.  I like to make and share other recipes too.  Unfortunately, I have found that is nearly impossible to photograph certain foods.  This lasagna would be an excellent example.

KitchenAid  was kind enough to send me a crockpot to try.  I love using my crockpot.  It’s an easy way to get dinner on the table and it’s hands free and oven free! Love it!  The first thing I made with my crockpot was brisket.  I knew I wanted to make pasta next and lasagna seemed like the perfect pasta for the crockpot.  I decided on a pizza flavored lasagna in the hopes  that my kids would devour it.   And devour it they did!  It was perfect!  Lots of Italian sausage and pepperoni; all the pizza flavors we love!  And I used Chobani Greek yogurt instead of traditional ricotta cheese to lighten it up just a bit.   All was perfect until I attempted to take a picture.  It was a bomb.  And so I made this lasagna again the following week.  At least I knew the kids would enjoy it.  Once again I attempted a picture.  Once again, my picture bombed.  Turns out lasagna is not very photogenic.

Typically, I scratch a recipe if I cannot take a decent picture.  But this recipe was too good NOT to share!  So I made crockpot lasagna for my family again the following week.  Ah the hazards of being related to a food blogger!  I cut a generous slice and set the table for the perfect picture.  The perfect picture was not to be had.  I just cannot photograph lasagna for the life of me.  While this lasagna was delicious, I knew better than to serve it to my family for the 4th straight week in a row.   These are the best pictures I could take!   As the saying goes, it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission.  So here I am asking your forgiveness for these pictures!!  I assure you the recipe will make up for it!

  1. Ugly recipes are so hard! I actually think about the possible picture before I make something. It’s terrible. I think this sounds and looks marvelous!

    • I usually don’t worry about the picture until after the recipe has finished cooking/baking. Maybe I should change that? Thanks Julie!

  2. Crockpots are my favorite thing to use! I don’t have to stand over the stove all day! I can throw it in and go!

    • Isn’t that the truth Nancy! I’m all for keeping the kitchen cool!

    • This really was a good crockpot recipe! Thanks Pamela!

  3. Tanya, I think this sounds delicious and LOOKS delicious, too! I’m glad that you shared it with us! :)

  4. Crock Pots save my life multiple times a week! The lasagna looks great!!

  5. I never would have thought to use a crockpot to cook lasagna, Tanya. Your looks as if you just pulled it out of a baking dish that had been baked in the oven, I think you’re being over-critical, too, about your photos. Having taken lasagna shots, these look fantastic. :)

    • I truly appreciate your compliment John! And the crockpot does a decent job cooking lasagna.

I think it looks delicious! You have it in focus and the lighting is correct. I’m glad to hear that I am not the only one that subjects my family to the same meal several times just so I can get a better picture! ;)

    • Not only does my family eat the same meal over and over, but sometimes,it’s on the cold side! Thanks Lisa!

    • I love the crockpot, Jessica. Makes my life easier! Thanks Jessica!

  7. I love all of your pictures, Tanya! You did an amazing job capturing the layers in this lasagna for sure! But, I so agree with you about how it’s so much easier to photograph sweets…why is that? But I’ll have to say, burritos of some sort are hard! Love this recipe. Pinning!

    • I’ve never tried burritos, but I’ve been warned now! Thanks Gloria!

  8. I love to hear the words crockpot and pizza in the same sentence!! My kids would be crazy over this!!

  9. Joke’s on you girl!!! I was scrolling through my reader and wanted to eat whatever was in the photo IMMEDIATELY!! I have never tried lasagna in the crock pot. I guess I need to get it together! And let’s talk about casseroles. Ugliest. Photos. Ever. Totally delicious though!

    • Oh yeah, casseroles are tough and so is anything orange! Oh well, thank you Heather!

  10. Some things are so impossible to photograph! I am totally on board for crock pot lasagna, thanks for linking it up with What’s Cookin’ Wednesday!

  11. […] Family meals are important to me.  I will do everything I can to keep us eating together, whether it means we all eat at 8:00 pm or 4:00 pm, I insist we eat together.  I know at some point, it will be impossible, but for now, I’ll make it happen.  There’s something special about all five of us sitting together to share a meal.  After all, during the school year, dinner is the only meal we can all enjoy together as a family.  I can’t let that go.  The dinner table is where we reconnect.  We talk about our day, we discuss what tomorrow will bring, we talk about what makes us happy and what worries us.  We make each other laugh and we smile.  I am not ready to give that up! When I face those busy weeks,  you can be sure I’ll be using my slow cooker.  One of my favorite slow cooker meals is chili.   It’s easy, versatile and makes for excellent leftovers!  When I found these Kraft Recipe Makers at Walmart , I knew they would make my life easier!  There were so many flavors to choose from, but I was drawn to the Hickory BBQ Beef.  I was in the mood for chili!  And this made  my chili come together quickly!  All the flavoring was right there in the box!  It couldn’t have been simpler.  I tossed my beef, the simmer sauce included in the box and a few extra ingredients into my crockpot and walked away.  Right before serving I stirred in the finishing sauce and dinner was served! I need to make a trip to Walmart to buy all the other 8 flavors of Kraft Recipe Makers!  I need to be prepared.  Busy weeks are rapidly approaching and meals on the run are NOT an option! Used no boil lasagna noodles, worked just fine. Saved a step.

    • Thanks Cherie! I should’ve mentioned that too. I tried those on my 4th attempt at the recipe and they worked perfectly.
