Low Country Boil

Low Country Shrimp Boil

We went to the “low country” for vacation.  The low country being South Carolina.  Apparently all of Ohio vacations there.  We felt right at home.   I think us northerners really annoy the locals, but I’m ok with that.

This was the first time my 3 little stooges saw the ocean.  The first thing they did when we arrived on the soft sandy beach was flop down and make sand angels.  They looked like three pale starfishes!

I love beach vacations!  The ocean breeze hitting our faces, the sound of the rolling waves, the smell of sunscreen on our skins and the sand in our toes.  I was hoping the sand would give me a natural pedicure.  Oh that sand.  I have a love hate relationship with sand.  I really do.  I love it because we do not have sand in Ohio.   It’s soft, you can shape it into sand kingdoms,  plus, where there’s sand, there’s water!  I do NOT like sand because it inevitably gets in some one’s eye (often due to a sibling), it’s in our food and it somehow ends up in my kids butts (sorry to be graphic, but it’s the truth!)  Lets not forget that sand follows you all the way home!  It’s in the van, in the suitcases, in the carpet because sea shells need to be sorted!  And I’ll be honest, I think I saw a piece of sand in my belly button.  I don’t often look in there, but for some reason, I glanced down and thought something was amiss.  Turns out it was just dry skin.  Boy would that have been embarrassing!

Anyhoo, back to vacation, South Carolina is beautiful.  The weather was perfect and the food was fresh.  As a tribute, I made Low Country Boil, aka, Frogmore Stew.  This meal is so fun, how often do you get to eat your whole meal with your hands!!!  Have a roll of paper towels handy for your low country boil because it will get messy.  Traditionally, low country shrimp boils or Frogmore Stew is just dumped out on newspapers. Have cocktail sauce and melted butter on the side.  I like spicy food, so I usually add Tabasco sauce to each bite.  Kids love it, adults love it.  It’s a great summer party idea!  Enjoy!

  4. This looks delicious! A low country boil is one of my favorite meals, and I do mine exactly like this. It’s a fun southern traditional meal. Glad you enjoyed your time at the beach.

  5. I’m an Ohio native now living in North Carolina. You’re right. Ohio takes over South Carolina for vacationing. Much like Ontario takes over Florida! :) Where do you live? Where did you go in SC? AND would you like to write a guest post for my travel blog? How’s that for questions? :)

    Happy Independence Day!

Looks like a great dish…I know a few Weastern NYers who like to head down to the Carolina beaches for a vacation. I’ve yet to go but they all tell me the water and sand are amazing!!!

  11. Michelle says:

Sounds yummy! I’ve seen people do it before, but have never done it myself. I love anything with shrimp and sausage. Like you, we just recently returned from a trip to South Carolina FROM Ohio! ;) We were meeting my family from FL. It was our first time and I loved it. I wish we would have gotten to the beach more, though. We were there for a week and only made it to the beach once. I could have used a little MORE sand!

  12. Gina says:

I agree with you, beach vacations are the best! I do need to explore the atlantic ocean a bit more though. The only time I was there was on the upper east coast by New Hampshire… pretty, but nothing like the feeling of warm sand between your toes!

  13. Regina says:

This looks really good. I’m not a seafood person, but that just looks great. Love the color of the corn!

What a great post. I love your vacation story and the recipe sounds delicious. I am a northerner and agree, I think we all head to the Carolina’s for those beach vacations. …..sometimes FLORIDA when we HAVE TO SEE MICKEY! Thanks for the recipe.

Instead of the East Coast, head for the Gulf Coast, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. You missed a few ingredients we use–Zataran’s Crab Boil and lots of whole garlic cloves. Of course you need Gulf (Louisiana) Shrimp.

This looks like something my husband would love, and it’s easy enough for me to make! Thanks for posting!

  19. MomHomeGuide says:

P.S. My husband isn’t too fond of Old Bay, though. Is there another seasoning that you would suggest instead? Thanks!!
