No, calamari cannot be made out of octopus. Octopuses and squids are both types of cephalopods, but they are different animals and have their own distinct textures and flavors. There are, however, over 300 species of squid worldwide, and the most commonly used species for calamari are the European squid, longfin inshor squid, and the Japanese flying squid.

What Part of the Squid is Used to Make Calamari?

Calamari can be made from all parts of the squid, though some people prefer just the circles or rings, which are made by slicing the squid’s body. The tentacles are also often consumed and are known for being thin and very crispy when fried.

What Does Calamari Taste Like?

Making calamari is relatively easy with the right ingredients and technique. Simply buy fresh squid, clean and prepare it, slice the body into strips, and then cook it quickly to prevent toughness.

What to Serve With Calamari?

Calamari is served as an appetizer but can also be a main dish that pairs well with a variety of side dishes like fresh green salads, roasted vegetables, or some seasoned rice. Additionally, dipping sauces like tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, marinara sauce, or garlic aioli can add extra flavor to the calamari while also complementing the texture. It is also recommended to add a few fresh lemon wedges to the plate for squeezing over the calamari.
