What is Green Salt?

Kitchen basics

Green salt is a seasoning blend made by mixing sea salt with herbs. Also known as ‘sal vert’ in French, green salt isn’t actually salt but rather a plant byproduct that can add a burst of flavor and freshness to recipes.

What is Green Salt?

What is Green Salt Made Of?

Green salt is made of a coarse sea salt and fresh green herb blend. The mixture is finely chopped herbs like parsley, tarragon, chives, and often garlic and lemon zest which has been dried and ground into a powder.

What Does Green Salt Taste Like?

Green salt has an umami flavor, meaning it is both salty and savory at the same time. The unique flavor combines the tast of salt with fresh herbs which enhances the overall taste of dishes.

Is Green Salt Healthy?

Green salt is a healthier alternative to standard table salt. The herbs offer some nutritional benefits like vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and the blend contains only about 20% sodium, while regular salt, contains about 40% sodium.

Can You Use Green Salt and Regular Salt Interchangeably?

Green salt and regular salt can be used interchangeably in almost any recipe. Keep in mind that green salt may add the flavors of the herbs it contents, and it is not quite as salty as white salt. For a recipe that requires a salty flavor, add green salt on a 2:1 ratio.

It is, however, not recommended to use green salt for recipes that are sweet (for example, salted caramel), as the savory taste of the green salt can affect the taste of the final product. In these cases, use regular or Himalayan salt for best results.

Additionally, green salt is very green in color, meaning it may change the color of your dish, especially when used in large amounts. While there is nothing wrong with this, some individuals might be turned off by food with a greenish tinge, so keep this in mind before replacing.
