I used to store almost everything in plastic. It felt easy and practical.
Over time, I noticed problems. Smells stayed in containers, stains would not go away, and some foods lost their taste faster than expected.
Once I changed what I stored in plastic, the difference showed up fast. These are the foods I no longer keep in plastic containers.

1. Tomato Sauce And Other Acidic Foods
Tomato sauce was the first issue I noticed.
It stained containers and left a smell that stayed after washing. The bigger problem is how acid reacts with plastic.
- It breaks down the surface over time
- It pulls color and smell into the material
- It can affect taste
Now I use glass jars. They do not absorb color or odor and are easier to clean.
2. Oily And High-Fat Foods
Anything rich in oil caused issues.
- Leftover takeout
- Fried food
- Cream-based dishes
Fat interacts with plastic in a way that pulls compounds out of it. It also leaves behind residue that is hard to remove.
Glass handles these foods better. It stays clean and does not hold grease.
3. Onions And Garlic
I learned this the hard way.
After storing chopped onions in plastic, everything else started to smell like them.
Plastic absorbs strong odors. Once that happens, it spreads to other foods stored in the same container later.
Now I use:
- Glass containers for chopped pieces
- Paper or mesh bags for whole bulbs
This keeps both freshness and smell under control.
4. Hot Food
I used to transfer food straight from the pan into plastic.
That creates two problems.
- Heat increases chemical transfer from the container
- Steam gets trapped and creates moisture buildup
That moisture leads to faster spoilage.
Now I let food cool first, then store it in glass or steel.
5. Fresh Herbs
Herbs stored in plastic did not last.
They turned soft, dark, and unusable in a short time. The problem is lack of airflow.
Plastic traps moisture and cuts off air, which herbs need.
Now I treat them like fresh plants.
- Store in a jar with water
- Keep them open to air
- Cut what I need when I need it
They stay fresh much longer.
The Bottom Line
I stopped using plastic for everything.
Some foods react with it, absorb smells, or break down faster. Once I switched to glass, paper, or open storage where needed, food stayed cleaner, fresher, and easier to manage.
