Gnats kept showing up in my kitchen no matter how clean it looked. I wiped surfaces, took out the trash, and still saw them hovering near fruit and the sink.
The fix came from something simple. I used a mix of three basic ingredients I already had, and within a few days, the number of gnats dropped fast.

The 3-Ingredient Trap I Used
I did not need anything complicated.
- Apple cider vinegar
- Dish soap
- Sugar
I mixed equal parts vinegar and dish soap in a bowl, then added a few spoonfuls of sugar.
After that, I left the bowl uncovered in the area where gnats gathered most.
Why This Mixture Works
The effect comes from how gnats react to smell and sugar.
The vinegar and sugar pull them in. Once they land on the surface, the dish soap breaks the tension of the liquid, so they sink instead of staying on top.
They do not escape once they touch the mixture.
Where I Place It For Best Results
Placement made a difference for me.
- Near the sink
- Next to fruit bowls
- Close to trash bins
Anywhere moisture and food smells build up tends to attract gnats first. That is where the trap works fastest.
What I Did To Stop Them From Coming Back
The trap solved the problem, but I had to deal with the source to keep them from returning.
The main issue in my case was the drain.
- I ran hot water for a few minutes
- Added baking soda and vinegar
- Let it sit for about 10 minutes
- Flushed with boiling water
That cleared out buildup where gnats tend to breed.
I also made a few small changes.
- I stopped leaving ripe fruit out
- I took out trash more often
- I stored food in sealed containers
I stopped chasing gnats and started targeting what attracts them.
The simple vinegar mixture handled the immediate problem. Cleaning the drain and managing food stopped it from coming back.
